Secretly Group is a family of American independent record labels composed of Dead Oceans, Ghostly International, Merge Records, drink sum wtr, Numero Group, Jagjaguwar, Saddest Factory Records™, and Secretly Canadian.

Dead Oceans

Dead Oceans is an independent record label founded in Bloomington in 2007 by Phil Waldorf and Chris Swanson. The label’s name comes from the lyrics of Bob Dylan’s 1963 song “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall”. Dead Oceans’ mission is to honor and subvert the canon of independent music, and to remake classic American music for a new century. The label’s aesthetic is diverse, and includes artists from a variety of genres, ages, and places. Artists include: Japanese Breakfast, Scowl, Toro y Moi, Greg Mendez, Cassandra Jenkins.

Ghostly International

Ghostly International is a music and art company supporting work of high quality, integrity, and individuality. Formed in 1999, Ghostly sprang onto the scene inside a cultural void left with the collapse of the traditional music business. The label has grown from a boutique known for its experimental and independent music acumen into an internationally recognized multicultural platform, widely known for independent electronic music amongst other genres. Artists include: Brijean, Kate Bollinger, Bullion, Julie Byrne, Casey MQ.

Jagjaguwar

JAGJAGUWAR is an independent record label known for its diverse roster of artists and innovative approach to music. Founded in 1996 by Darius Van Arman, the label has established itself as a significant force in the indie music scene, working with a range of artists from genres like indie rock, folk, and experimental music. JAGJAGUWAR has gained a reputation for nurturing long-term artist development and releasing critically acclaimed albums. Some of the notable artists associated with the label include Bon Iver, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, and Dinosaur Jr. The label is also known for its commitment to artistic integrity, allowing artists the creative freedom to explore and innovate.

drink sum wtr

drink sum wtr is a true culture label that is constructed for creatives, bringing forth unique voices in Hip-Hop, R&B, and adjacent sounds. drink sum wtr seeks to return to an artist development driven label approach, swimming against the current in an algorithm-saturated music landscape, and focusing on championing distinctive, art-forward voices. Artists include:  aja monet, Annahstasia, Gareth Donkin, Say She She.

Merge Records

Merge Records is an independent record label based in Durham, North Carolina. It was founded in 1989 by Laura Ballance and Mac McCaughan. It began as an outlet for music from their band Superchunk and music created by friends, and has expanded to include artists from around the world, with records reaching the top of the Billboard music charts. Artists include: Crooked Fingers, Fruit Bats, Dawn Richard.

Numero Group

The Numero Group is an internationally recognized archival record label and rights management firm founded in 2003 by Rob Sevier and Ken Shipley. The 12-time Grammy nominated label prides itself on having a team of master storytellers and craftspeople that have redeveloped the careers of Duster, Laraaji, Pastor T.L. Barrett, Unwound, Penny & The Quarters, and Syl Johnson.

Secretly Canadian

Secretly Canadian is an independent record label founded in 1996 by brothers Chris and Ben Swanson, Eric Weddle, and Jonathan Cargill in Bloomington, Indiana. Initially, they operated from the Swansons’ basement with limited resources and experience. Their first official release was a re-issue of an album by June Panic. The label gained prominence after signing Jason Molina (under the Songs: Ohia moniker), and later expanded to include artists like Faye Webster, The War on Drugs, and others.

Saddest Factory Records

Saddest Factory Records is an independent record label founded by Phoebe Bridgers in 2020. The label is dedicated to nurturing and promoting artists who create emotionally impactful and introspective music. It serves as a creative platform for musicians whose work resonates with the introspective and indie qualities embodied by Bridgers herself. Artists include: MUNA, jasmine.4.t, Katie Gavin.
